Healthy Bites With Rita Smith: DASH to lower Blood Pressure

Hi! I’m Rita Smith, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. I’ve been working in the field of nutrition and disease prevention for over 35 years, and currently work at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. I look forward to chatting with you each week on various nutrition topics – from using dietary approaches for cholesterol reduction to managing the painful symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Nutrition is ever-changing and can even be confusing. I hope to make sense of current nutrition topics and provide reasonable, healthy-eating tips for you and your family to be well and stay well. Of course, for medical advice, diagnosis, treatment and care, be sure to work with your own health care provider.

Looking forward to hearing your podcasts. I can tell you that this past year I decided to really put forth an effort to lose weight and get in shape. I have dropped close to 40 lbs and I am no longer on Blood Pressure medicine. Being off the meds is great incentive to me.
    All the best in 2012

  2. Hi Charles. Wow, good for you. I am so glad to hear about your healthy lifestyle changes, with the resulting 40 lb. weight loss….. wooo-hooo!! YES, getting off and staying off meds must really be an inspiration to keep you on track. I think that meds are taken so casually in this country, and yet, with exercise and/or weight loss and/or changes in food choices, so many of those meds can be completely avoided. Keep up the good work. I’ll be rooting for you.
