Hi! I’m Rita Smith, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. I’ve been working in the field of nutrition and disease prevention for over 35 years, and currently work at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. I look forward to chatting with you each week on various nutrition topics – from using dietary approaches for cholesterol reduction to managing the painful symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
Nutrition is ever-changing and can even be confusing. I hope to make sense of current nutrition topics and provide reasonable, healthy-eating tips for you and your family to be well and stay well. Of course, for medical advice, diagnosis, treatment and care, be sure to work with your own health care provider.

I’m a working mom and struggle to find the time or inspiration for cooking. Or meal planning anyway. I don’t mind cooking when I know I have instructions. And even better if I follow a meal planner that plans healthy meals for the family so we know we are all eating right.
I´m a working mom, too and i think it´s really hard to find time to cook healthy meals. I really love cooking but it is not easy to bring it all together, being a mom, going to work and spend enough time with my lovely kids and on top be a housewife.
Thanks for your comments. I agree. There can be so many crazy no-time-to-cook nights when you have kids. What is interesting is that much of the research about family meal time indicates that the most important thing is HAVING meal time together- not so much WHAT you serve. In other words, sharing a take-home pizza with your family is as important as sharing a made-from-scratch meal. So that takes off some of the burden, as a mom, of feeling that every meal has to be just right. Also, maybe one part of the meal is healthy on those busy nights. Order out the pizza, but serve with a raw veggie platter.
Hi Rita,
Thanks for the information, I have been looking to start a program to help with my weight and also to just start eating better.. I will check out your blog..
