The conversation also recaps the recent controversial lecture and q&a session with Elliott Abrams on peace in the Middle East. Before previewing upcoming lectures- including one on the origins of the Peace Corps and another on the value of public opinion polls, Gilliam also talks a little bit about his area of scholarly expertise: Virginia history.
Grace Hale, an associate professor in the University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of History, joins Coy Barefoot to discuss the modern history of unions in America. Her most recent book is A Nation of Outsiders : How the White Middle Class Fell in Love with Rebellion in Postwar America
2.28.11 Associate Professor and Director of the Historic Preservation Program in the UVA School of Architecture Dan Bluestone joins Coy to discuss the Meadowcreek Parkway. Bluestone talks about the history of the road, and he also touches on the lawsuit which has brought the Meadowcreek Parkway into the news stream recently.
2.28.11 Founder and President of Bob Holsworth joins Coy to discuss recent political news in the Commonwealth. On the docket for today’s conversation are Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell being on the short list for the Vice Presidential nomination, the continued discussion surrounding the privatization of ABC stores, and the new safety standard requirements for abortion clinics. Holsworth is also a Managing Principal of Decide Smart.
2.24.11 Member of the Albemarle County School Board Eric Strucko joins Coy to discuss the effects of recent budget cuts on education. He also talks about just how innovative the teachers of today are, and have to be, in order to get through to their students.
2.24.11 Best-selling author and political analyst David Swanson joins Coy for an extended conversation about the events in Wisconsin. Swanson breaks down the comments made by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker during the recent prank call by an imposter claiming to be well known philanthropist and political advocate David Koch. He also addresses the idea of a “class war” which we may or may not be witnessing in the Packer state. 2.24.11 Lolita Bland joins Coy to discuss first annual EMBODI Conference in Charlottesville. The conference, co-hosted by the Charlottesville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and 100 Black Men of Central Virginia, is titled “Empowering Males to Build Opportunities and Develop Independence,” and will be held at PVCC on Saturday, March 12.
2.23.11 Mayor of the City of Charlottesville Dave Norris joins Coy to discuss the Meadowcreek Parkway lawsuit press conference. Mayor Norris also talks about issues pertaining to environmental upkeep in the area.
