Charlottesville–Right Now: Rey Barry recalls a 1959 plane crash in Albemarle County

Long-time Charlottesville resident Rey Barry joined Coy Barefoot on the Thursday, May 4 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to talk about a plane crash in Albemarle County. Piedmont flight 349 went off course after missing Charlottesville Airport on October 30, 1959. Barry was a staff announcer for WCHV and assisted in the search to find the downed plane. Thirty-six hours later, he came across the lone survivor and the bodies of the 26 people who didn’t make it.

Coy Barefoot looks back at The Corner

Have you ever been to a village or town in Virginia that was simply called University? If you’ve ever eaten at a place on the Corner, the answer is yes. Local author and journalist Coy Barefoot interviewed countless people who remember what the five-block stretch of businesses just outside Grounds and produced a book called The Corner: A History of Student Life at the University of Virginia. Barefoot was the featured speaker of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society’s Last Wednesday Speaker Series on July 27, 2005. The monthly event took place at the Senior Center.
