Charlottesville–Right Now: Tom Faulders of the University of Virginia Alumni Association

Tom Faulders is the president and CEO of the University of Virginia Alumni Association. He’s a member of the Class of ’71, and was at the University when it was going through a similar period of growth. The Alumni Association was established in 1838 as a way for graduates to provide money for the University without it going through Richmond. He joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to talk about the Association’s mission to engage alumni.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Filmmaking at U.Va with Rom Alejandro, Han West and Bruce Sanborn

Rom Alejandro and Han West are student filmmakers at the University of Virginia, and part of the Filmmaker’s Society. Bruce Sanborn is an award-winning screenwriter who works for WINA. All three join Coy Barefoot on a recent edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss filmmaking in the digital work, as well as Alejandro’s new film, Roskosmos, about two cosmonauts doomed to circle the Earth when their space capsule malfunctions. He and West talk about the challenges of making film at U.Va, a school without a formal film program.

Best Seat: U.Va Baseball Coach Brian O’Connor

On the Wednesday edition of WINA’s “Best Seat in the House,” Jed Williams spoke in-studio with Virginia baseball coach Brian O’Connor about this week’s Orange-Blue Series. The series will take place Thursday through Saturday at Davenport Field. The “Best Seat” will be broadcasting live from Davenport Field for Thursday night’s game.

Debate about the Marshall-Newman Amendment

Delegate Bob Marshall is the author of the Marshall-Newman amendment, which if passed this November will codify state law against same-sex marriages and other civil unions into the Virginia Constitution. Evan Wolfson is the executive director of the group Freedom to Marry, a national organization formed to be a “central architect of the marriage equality movement.” The two men met in debate at the University of Virginia Law School on October 5th. The debate was moderated by Dahlia Lithwick, a senior editor of Slate.com.

U.Va Astronomer Ed Murphy explains why Pluto was demoted

U.Va astronomer Ed Murphy drops by WINA to talk with Coy Barefoot for his regular update on space and the solar system. Ed explains the International Astronomical Union’s decision last week to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet. Pluto lacks the mass to “clear out its neighborhood” and is no longer considered to be a full planet. Ed gives his opinion on this, and also gives an update on the two Voyager probes and the Pluto Express mission.

Semester at Sea ready to set sail at U.Va

Even though Charlottesville does not have a port, the University of Virginia is now home to the Semester at Sea program. That’s where students take classes aboard a ship that travels around the world. U.Va Spanish professor David Gies will serve as the academic dean of the maiden voyage, and Dudley Doane is the director of summer and special academic programs at U.Va. David and Dudley join Coy Barefoot on the July 21st edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss how program.
