Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie helm an excellent show with two moving and fascinating guests. First, author Wendy Zomparelli visits the show for the first time. A longtime journalist, Wendy is now writing fiction. She talks about her children’s book Princess Ingeborg and the Dragons, which she will be reading at New Dominion Bookshop. We talk to Wendy about working on the book, about going to fiction from journalism, and about some of her thoughts on writing in general. Next, Charlottesville dance man Edwin Roa, founder of Zabor Dance, comes on the show to talk about Zaltandi: Charlottesville’s First World Dance Fest coming to The Ix Art Park. Edwin talks about the power of dance, about how he looks to dance to bring people together and to bring people to themselves. Growing up swathed in the Celtic music tradition, Olwell is experimenting with the style with his group CyberTrad, where he mixes his flute with and electric bass and beatboxer. That’s right — beatbox. We talk to Matthew about cultural and artistic interchange, specifically between Irish American and African American music traditions. Today on Home Grown, David talks to two artists who have put on their arts organizer hats to better spread the good word and the good art. First, Mike Bizarro is putting together an A Capella Hip Hop night at The Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. It’s local wordsmiths speaking their words without their beats. True to his role, Mike drops bits of knowledge about the nature of hip hop and the nature of art as if the knowledge was going out of style. Next, David welcomes back Miller Murray Susen just as Live Arts Theatre welcomes her back as its Education Director. We talk to Miller about what Live Arts offers in terms of education and what she hopes it can offer in the future. Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David throws down with two righteous groups of guests visiting the show for the first time. First, we welcome Lisa Jevack, Assistant to the Director and Early Visions Coordinator of The Fralin Art Museum and Charlene Green, Manager of the the Charlottesville Office of Human Rights. The Fralin and the City are partners in The Signs of Change Project along with The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center and The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative — a project that seeks to use art to raise the profile of African American history in Charlottesville history. Then — you maybe have seen him on the Downtown Mall — here, photographer Eze Amos steps out from behind the camera to talk about his artistic goals and how and why he came to focus on photographing people on the Downtown Mall. He is New City Arts’ current artist in residence, and you can see Eze’s work at his show, Eze Amos: Cville People Everyday. Next Jaewar from Vibe Riot returns to the show because it’s time for Vibe Fest 2018: The Summer of Love at The Ix Art Park!!! Jay talks about the challenges of putting on an event like Vibe Fest and about the challenges that artists who work for peace have in these times. Home Grown: Words: Poet Mary Anna Dunn and Spoken Word Artists The Fire Tigers

Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie take a look at two different kinds of poets who have channelled trauma into their art. First, poet Mary Anna Dunn visits the show for the first time. She has taken letters from her (slave owning) ancestors and used them as inspiration for her first poetry chapbook Letters to Littles’ Mills, in anticipation of her release reading at the New Dominion Bookshop. We talk to Mary Anna about her history as an artist and about her family history that she’s worked into her art. Next Flora Lark and JonaNoelle, the spoken work duo The Fire Tigers, also make their first appearance on the show. You can catch them at Fire & Smoke, a joint show with improv group Big Blue Door at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative. Flora Lark and JonaNoelle talk about their performance art that encourages people to acknowledge trauma, address trauma, and heal from trauma. First, it’s Lauren Maupin, Education and Program Manager at The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. We talk to Lauren about common misunderstandings about the Kluge-Ruhe, about the benefits that the community can glean from experiencing the works of outside artists, and about this year’s Night at the Museum summer series. Next David Plunkett, director of The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library comes on the show and weathers us at our silliest. Most notably, our David challenges that David to justify the library’s existence, and he does! He’s spent years collecting graffiti from Vietnam soldiers. Hear him talk about his and his wife’s efforts to collect and save these pieces of folk art and their significance. Then, go see his talk at the Nothside Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. Then we welcome Greg Ward with bassist Gabe Gavin from The Greg Ward Project. They strap on the intruments and give us a taste of the music before talking about reggae and unity before their concert in Crozet.
