Today on Home Grown, it’s week three of David stuck in the clutches of his day job. So, in his absence, Leslie welcomes back two former guests to the show. First, expressionist painter Adam Disbrow makes his second appearance on Home Grown. He’s got a new show called UTOPIA: New Works by Adam Disbrow going up at Mudhouse for this month’s First Fridays. Adam is a great artist to talk to, and the discussion very quickly dives down to his thoughts on “the stages of creation.” He also talks about UTOPIA — about the show, about the piece that shares the show’s name, and about the show’s other pieces. Then the only thing that can raise our spiris from having to say goodbye to Adam is to say hello again to guitarist Greg Brown. His new album Greg C. Brown drops August 10. Greg talks about the diverse range of original songs on the album, spanning a number of years. He also performs a song from the album live for us. Today on Home Grown, David is still held hostage by his day job, which is appropriate because the reality of day jobs putting a limit on artistic activities is just one of the topics Leslie and Clinton cover with local visual artist, Nym Pedersen. His show Synonyms, Antonyms is currently running at Chroma Projects: an Art Laboratory (and will be running until the end of this coming week). We talk about his show and its collection of fluid, minimalist figure drawings and collages. We talk about Nym’s process and his time on the Downtown Mall running Art Snacks. And, of course, we enjoy the observations that come from a mature, long-time, experienced artist. Today on Home Grown, Leslie soldiers on alone as David is called in by his day job. Still, the show goes on. First we spend some time with Four County Players. Specifically, we have Perry Medlin and Austin Robey, the director and music director of the upcoming 4CP musical Young Frankenstein. Leslie, Perry, and Austin get into the challenges of doing a HUGE summer musical with a lot of enthusiasm and volunteer actors. Next, filmmaker Ty Cooper (trapped in Chicago by airline problems) calls in. Ty updates us on his documentary America’s Darkest Future and then talks about his new, fictional short film, Mingle. Ty — the consumate artistic mover-shaker — even gives us pointers on submitting films to festivals.(Are we allowed to contact the VA Film Festival and ask them to screen Mingle?) Now she returns as a renting artist with her own show Gaean Reveries. We talk about her show and her art in general — the importance of nature in her work, how her work is changing, and roll of art in general. Next Jaewar from Vibe Riot returns to the show because it’s time for Vibe Fest 2018: The Summer of Love at The Ix Art Park!!! Jay talks about the challenges of putting on an event like Vibe Fest and about the challenges that artists who work for peace have in these times. Home Grown: Words: Poet Mary Anna Dunn and Spoken Word Artists The Fire Tigers

Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie take a look at two different kinds of poets who have channelled trauma into their art. First, poet Mary Anna Dunn visits the show for the first time. She has taken letters from her (slave owning) ancestors and used them as inspiration for her first poetry chapbook Letters to Littles’ Mills, in anticipation of her release reading at the New Dominion Bookshop. We talk to Mary Anna about her history as an artist and about her family history that she’s worked into her art. Next Flora Lark and JonaNoelle, the spoken work duo The Fire Tigers, also make their first appearance on the show. You can catch them at Fire & Smoke, a joint show with improv group Big Blue Door at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative. Flora Lark and JonaNoelle talk about their performance art that encourages people to acknowledge trauma, address trauma, and heal from trauma. Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie welcome two art curators to the show to talk about what their organizations bring to our town. First, it’s Lauren Maupin, Education and Program Manager at The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. We talk to Lauren about common misunderstandings about the Kluge-Ruhe, about the benefits that the community can glean from experiencing the works of outside artists, and about this year’s Night at the Museum summer series. Next David Plunkett, director of The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library comes on the show and weathers us at our silliest. Most notably, our David challenges that David to justify the library’s existence, and he does! Today on Home Grown, David rides solo and front loads a much needed and well-felt rant at the start of a broad ranging show. First, we have Art Beltrone, co-founder of The Vietnam Graffiti Project. He’s spent years collecting graffiti from Vietnam soldiers. Hear him talk about his and his wife’s efforts to collect and save these pieces of folk art and their significance. Then, go see his talk at the Nothside Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. Then we welcome Greg Ward with bassist Gabe Gavin from The Greg Ward Project. They strap on the intruments and give us a taste of the music before talking about reggae and unity before their concert in Crozet. We welcome to the show, for the first time, John Johnson, founder of Darkstone Entertainment, where he has written, directed, and produced his own horror TV shows, short films, and feature films. We also talk about a development in John’s personal life that he’s just shared with the world, his diagnosis as having Parkinsons Disease. Home Grown: Community: Writer Cliff Garstang from SWAG and Painter Frank Walker

Today on Home Grown, Leslie returns … well, most of her. She seems to have misplaced her voice, but she and David soldier on! Cliff Garstang joins us from over the mountain. He’s the founder of SWAG – The Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta Group of the Virginia Writer’s Club and the organizer of a poetry reading at Black Swan Books & Music. We talk to Cliff about what makes this reading (during National Poetry Month) special, and he talks about the importance of artists having a community to work with. Then, Charlottesville painter Frank Walker comes on the show and utterly beguiles us. He has a joint portraiture show with Jae Jae Johnson called Visage at New City Arts. So we start to talk to Frank about portraiture and very quickly move on to talk about the nature of art. It’s all art / no snobbery here on Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art.

Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie welcome two sets of impressive artists to our airwaves. First, studiomates Peneople Stone and Esther visit the show for the first time. Penelope is an experieced urban forager who uses her talents to make easter eggs with natual dyes. Esther works exclusively in matzah. They talk about their work and their working relationship and about what they are doing artistically to celebrate Eastover. Next, we’re pleased and wowed to have Charlottesville’s favorite artistic son, Duncan MacMhunna, well known and lauded for his wax sculptures of B-List stars. David and Leslie fight through being starstruck to ask Duncan about his process, his vision, and his keen eye for a celebrity on the rise and on the fall. (Andy rumors that our guests are actually Jessie Conover & Marjory Ruderman from Big Blue Door’s Feminine Hijinks Improv and Andy Davis from Bent Theatre Comedy Improv are foolish and falacious.)
