David Toscano is serving his fifth term in the Virginia General Assembly. He represents the 57th District (Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County) in the House of Delegates and, since 2011, has served as House Democratic Leader. David is a member of the Courts of Justice; Transportation; and Rules committees. David is also a member of the Disability Commission and has served on the special Joint Subcommittee to Study Land Use Tools in the Commonwealth and the Joint Committee to study Math, Science, and Engineering. He is a member of the Manufacturing Development Commission, the Virginia Adopts Statewide Steering Committee, the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program Committee, and the Board of Directors of the New College Institute. He is also a member of the United Way Board.

Geoffrey Skelley is the media relations coordinator for the University of Virginia Center for Politics and associate editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball, the Center’s nonpartisan newsletter on American campaigns and elections. As a political analyst, Geoffrey has been quoted or cited in numerous print and online publications, such as the New York Times, Politico, Newsweek, and Huffington Post, among others, and does frequent radio and television interviews with local, national, and international media organizations. He also speaks to organizations around Charlottesville and Virginia on a regular basis, giving presentations at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville and to groups like the Senior Statesmen of Virginia. Geoffrey has been with the Center since 2011.
A native of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Geoffrey received an M.A. in Political Science (with a focus on the European Union) from James Madison University in 2011, and is a graduate of the University of Virginia, receiving a B.A. in History in 2009. Beyond the Center and his love for American politics, Geoffrey closely follows developments in international affairs, sports, and music.

This week WPVC’s Sunday Morning Wake-up Call host Rick Moore talks with International Rescue Committee Executive Director for Charlottesville Harriet Kuhr about the IRC, its mission, history, process and the current politics of refugee settlement since the Paris attacks.
Harriet Kuhr joined the IRC in Atlanta in 2004 as manager of the program that helps resettled refugees find employment. In 2006, she became the manager of resettlement services, eventually overseeing a staff of some 20 case managers, employment coordinators and logistics specialists. She has been executive director of the IRC in Charlottesville since April 2010.
Her prior work experience includes more than 20 years working in the field of international cultural exchange. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

This week Rick is joined by the Co-Chairs of Charlottesville’s Youth Council, Mo Brown and Ramsey Byrne, along with Areeb Khan, UVA advisor to the Youth Council. The group works with city council and features 17 members aged 13-18. The purpose of Youth Council is to advise the council and inform the community about issues that affect youth, and makes recommendations on how they feel Charlottesville can be a better city.
Rick Moore has assembled a group to discuss how poverty affects the Charlottesville area. Alicia Lenahan, President of Piedmont CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocates work for children whose parents are unable or unwilling to keep their children safe. Ridge Schuyler, director of Charlottesvile Works Initiative, helping local residents find decent work. Although minimum wage is $14K a year, for a Mother with two children to work and commute in Charlottesville, she would need to make about $34K a year. Along with Susan Goins-Eplee, MSN, RN, Bilingual Community Health Nurse for Jefferson Area CHiP, working with parents to make healthy homes, to help interpret, not only the language barrier, but also to interpret and navigate the healthcare system.
On Saturday, February 21 these groups, headed by Piedmont CASA will put on the Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS). The goal for the 80 participants is to keep a roof over their head and get their bills paid with a kit to role-play the life of a low-income family. More details on the CAPS simulation here.
